Katmandoo Features

Katmandoo is a relational database with a normalised data model, and as such follows the accepted theory of database design with its inherent advantages. It is impossible to anticipate all future demands placed on a system such as this; Katmandoo has been designed to be both flexible and extensible to better cope with unforseen requirements without violating the fundamental principles of sound database design.

Some of the key features of Katmandoo are noted below and include flexibility in design and external file formats, links to standard applications, ability to connect to multiple databases and security.

• Experimental units are identified by user defined design factors.
• Sampling units are defined to allow indefinite sub-sampling.
• Traits and variates can define repeated measurements.
• Treatment structures extend to factorial combinations.
• Import data file columns not fixed by name or position; data file column headings can be mapped to internal database columns.
• Aliases are allowed for Genotypes, Traits, System Columns and Virtual columns.
• Display names (captions) for system columns can be customised.
• Data items not coded for can be added via virtual columns, requiring no change to the database structure.

• Data validation rules exported in Microsoft Excel compatable spreadsheets
• Labels for experimental units generated via Microsoft Word mail-merge type wizard

Multiple crops can coexist in a single database or in separate databases according to site preference. With the single database option, the security model ensures data privacy.

Multi-level security with access permissions assigned to users at login. Security permissions apply at the record level within subsystems.
