Trial is a comparative experiment established to test the effectness of various
treatments.
There are following three parts of trial information stored in the database.
- Trial Metadata : Header information (such as
Site, Year, Trial Type, Trial Number,
Trial Manager etc) of the trial are stored in
this part of the database.
- Trial Operation: This part stores information
that was gathered on overall trial ie the unit position (such as Column/Row) are
not applicable or not relavant.
For example: Measuring Dry Matter measurement randomly within a trial.
- Trial Unit of Trial Design: This part stores information
(such as treatment, design parameters and sample information)
of each trial unit (ie trial design) of the trial.
- Raw data: This part stores raw data of
each trial unit (ie trial design) of the trial.
Trial Alternate Key
The trial table has two
alternate keys.
While importing data, the source file must have either [
Site Name,
Site Year,
Trial Type Name and
Trial Number ] columns
or [
Trial Acronym ] column
(without space in the column name) in order to find the Trial in the database.
Trial Number
Number (count) of Trial when multiple trials of same
trial
type done at a site in a year. If there are trials of same trial type in
a site on a year then the first trial get the trial number 1 and the second one
gets trial number 2.
The system-generated trial number can be changed using the
Trial
Setup Form before the trial has any dependant data.
Trial Manager
Trial Manager is the person or responsible unit (ie
Contact) who is responsible for managing the trial.
While importing trial, if the source file does not have
Trial Manager Name column or has empty (null) value for the
Trial Manager Name column, then
Unknown Contact is used for
the trial manager.
Latitude and Longitude
The Latitude and Longitude of Trials are used by the
Trial Navigator to perform
map-based search in the database. Though these values are optional, it
is strongly recommended to enter these values so that the map-based search can be
used in the navigator (as shown below).
Illustrative snapshot:
- Click on the button to activate the map-based-search form.
- Displays current latitude of the cursor position in the map.
- Displays current longitude of the cursor position in the map.
- The surrounding area (km) determine the radius of the circle when click on the
map (in this example, its "400").
- In this example, the area in which the location will be searched to display in
the Contact Navigator. If a location does not
have latitude or longitude then the location is excluded from the search.
How is Latitude and Longitude
managed in Katmandoo?
When Latitude and Longitude is entered for an existing or a new Trial, Katmandoo
checks whether the Latitude and Longitude already exist in the GeoCoordinate
table. If it does, then GeoCoordinateId is updated for the Trial record. If
not, a new record is created in the GeoCoordinate table with given Latitude
and Longitude. Then new GeoCoordinateId is updated for the Trial record.
Following information must exist before a Trial can be added into the database.
- Site: Site, where the trial is done, must exist
in the database before the trial record can be added.
- Site Year: To add a trial using
trial setup form, the site year record must exist. But while importing, the
site year records are added by the system if it does not exist.
- Trial Type: The trial type of the trial must exist.
- Design Type: Design type of the trial must exist in
the DesignType table. If the design type information is
not available, then Unknown Design
Type should be used.
- Contact: The trial
manager name must exist in
the Contact table. If the trial manager information is
not available, then Unknown Contact should be used.
Note: Although Unknown Design Type and Unknown Contact
can be used, it is preferable to add the Design Type and Trial Manager before adding
a new trial. This avoids changing at a later date.
Use
[
Task > Trial > Raw data > Manage Trial & Raw data ] to activate
the trial navigator.
an illustration of the navigator template.
- Click here for more information about
the nodes in the trial navigator.
The trial navigator allows user to quickly find the trial, trial operation, trial
design and raw data information. The navigator has following options to build the
nodes in the navigator:
Important Note: Katmandoo automatically selects the option and node that
were selected last
time (ie before closing the navigator or Katmadoo).

Trial Navigator Nodes
Following is the structure of the trial navigator nodes:
- Site Node: Text of
the node is Name of the site which
can be used in the selected Sub-system and has site year record. Click it
to display the trials of the selected site (ie "Cowra Research Station" in
the snapshot) in the Trial Main Form.
- Site Year Node: Text
of the node is Site Year. Click it to display the trials in the selected site
year (ie Year "2007" in the snapshot).
- Trial Type Node: Text
of the node is Trial Type Name. Click it to display the trials of the Trial
Type in the selected site year of the site (ie Trials of trial type "Wheat
Showing Time" in Year 2007 of "Cowra Research Station").
- There are Raw data, Trial Operation and Analysis of Variance nodes for each trials of the selected node.
- Raw data
node: Text of the node is "Trial Acronym Raw
data". Click it to display the trial units of the trial (ie Trial Design) as well
as raw data of the Trial (ie Trial Design + Raw data of "Wheat Sowing Time" trial
done in 2007 and located in "Cowra Research Station")
- Trial Operation
node: Text of the node is "Trial Acronym Trial
Operation". This node is added only if the
current Sub-system can have trial operation. Click it to display the trial
operations of the trial as well as trial operation measurement and treatment of
the Trial (ie Trial Operation + Trial Ops Measurement + Trial Ops Treatment for
the "Wheat Sowing Time" trial done in 2007 and located in "Cowra Research Station")
- Analysis
of Variance node (AOV): Text of the node is "Trial
Acronym Analysis of Variance". This node is added only when the trial has
AOV records. Click it to display the AOVs of the trial the Trial (ie Trial AOV for
the "Wheat Sowing Time" trial done in 2007 and located in "Cowra Research Station")
To display trials in the Trial Main Form, follow the steps below:
Illustrative snapshot:
- Trial Navigator with selected site
node "Cowra Research Station".
- Toolbar of Trial Metadata main form
to add/edit/delete trial metadata.
- Trial Main Form displaying the trials at the selected site.
- Use [ View > Arrange columns in Main Form ] to change default order of displayed.
Alternately it can be changed by
editing the column list of the Misc Group
TrialSetupDataGrid.
an illustration of the main form template.
- Trial subform displays Virtual column information
of the selected site (ie "Cowra Research Station" in the snapshot).
- Trial Design
(Unit), Raw
data, Trial
Operation and KollecTrait
toolbar menus.
- The filter in the trial main form displays the trials of site "Cowra Research Station"
for the year 2007 only.
